I have met with Salomon S-Lab Sense Series and used Ultra version almost one years ago. I was also lucky enough to own one of the limited edition Saolmon S-Lab Sense Kilian Jornet edition as well. The shoes were incredibly Light and also strong for especially training on hard surfaces. I do also have Salomon Speed Cross, Salomon S-Lab XT 5 Soft and Hardgrounds as well.
Couple of months ago when Salomon team was training, the sneak peaks of the soft ground version of Salomon S-Lab Sense 3 Ultra Softground revealed. Especially in muddy environments you need a better grip also a very light shoe. Finally Salomon designed it and I got one with the help of Castleberg Outdoors to try our in my backyard, the muddy Wimbledon Common Trails.
The shoe is designed because of the comments coming especially from Salomon elite runners for soft ground. The shoe looks exactly the samel from top. when you turn it down the outsole looks like FellRaiser, Fellcross or SpeedCross, much more rugged than S-Lab XT 5 Soft Grounds.
As you know from my other reviews all Sense shoes are designed to be used without socks. This is called Endofit. Both back, inner part of the tongue and front part has a layer like a thin towel covering inside the shoe. My personal choice is to go half size up and use it with thin socks. I dont like using it without socks. thats my choice. I suggest trying these shoes before buying. Some people even find to go up one size on these shoes due to their fit.
The shoe laces are standard like other Salomon shoes, Salomon s-lab sense 3 ultra softground uses quick lace system with a lace garage. This helps you get rid of your lace problems and makes your feet comfortable. The top of the shoe and front part is also exceptionally protected by a new design. These shoes are strong. The best way to keep them alive is I use a nail brush to clean my shoes under cold water. Thats the best way to make them last longer.
The very first feeling of the shoe, if you are one of the current users of Sense or Sense Ultra is Salomon s-lab sense 3 ultra softground is much heavier compared to the other. But it is not actually. The feeling and the tough outsole gives you that but it is 240 grams.
The shoe still feels like a minimalist shoe even with the tough outer sole. Two years ago when Salomon first introduced the Salomon Sense fırst edition, the shoe was not very strong. After 300kms of running, that was it. Of course it was not very imprtant for sponsored elites but for a regular runner who paid 140 GBp was not very happy about it. Pro-Feel Film rock plate introduced with the Salomon Sense Ultra and this inspired the new upcoming series be more strong and durable.
The sole has 5mm thick lugs. These are almost the same with FellRaiser and abit bigger than FellCross 1. (I saw Fellcross 3 too is almost looking similar) The sole isplanned to have the lugs seperated from each other so that in very wet conditions it helsp you stick to the ground. I did not run in very muddy conditions but my winter, I bet will be spent with them in muddy ENGLAND fields.
My overall suggestion is I would not run anything tarmac or asphalt with this shoe. Even my house is only half a mile a way from muddy Wimbledon Common forest, that half mile is not comfortable for me in asphalt. I suggest and recommend this shoe to be used only in long ultra Trail races, fell races, boggy field trainings… Almost built for them…
